At some point in life most people have to deal with a common skin condition known as acne. This is especially common in teenagers, however the problem can plague adults as well.

What Causes Acne?

The causes of acne are often misunderstood. Acne is caused by changes in hormones. Increased oil production contributes to pores getting clogged, trapping bacteria in the skin.

The area around the clogged pores gets infected causing the skin to become inflamed and result in breakouts. Getting rid of the infection by picking at it or squeezing it does not cure the problem and can result in permanent scarring and further spread bacteria.

Does Poor Hygiene Cause Breakouts?

One of the most common myths is that acne is caused by poor hygiene. While gentle cleansing should be part of a daily hygiene routine, hygiene is not the cause of acne. Oil and dead skin cells produce outbreaks. Gentle cleansing can help control the spread of bacteria but won’t cure it.

Pizza and Pimples

Another acne myth is that diet is the cause of outbreaks. This is also untrue. Eating chocolate, pizza, fried foods and soft drinks are often blamed for causing pimples. Eaten in moderation, these foods are fine.

Tip: Eating a balanced diet with lots of fresh fruits, vegetables and water is the best acne advice related to diet. Sensible eating and regular exercise will contribute to overall healthy skin.

Makeup Causes Acne… or Does It?

Another myth is that wearing makeup causes acne. This is not necessarily true. Some makeup products can clog pores so it is best to use products that are labeled non-comedogenic or non-acnegenic. They are actually designed to help treat acne.

The Sun and Acne

Some people believe that getting a tan will clear up acne. Unfortunately, this is not true. Exposure to sun can temporarily dry oily pores and darken the skin, improving the appearance of the skin. However, this does not get rid of the bacteria that is deep in the pores.

Sun exposure can cause premature aging, wrinkles, and possibly skin cancer. Using an oil-free sunscreen with a high SPF is the best way to protect skin from sun exposure without irritating acne breakouts.

No matter what age acne strikes, dispelling common myths can make it a little less stressful.
